I chose Rockport, Texas, in 2014 as the “Winter Texan” home for me and my RV. A quaint little coastal community, full of artists and Texas charm, Rockport has been my winter home since then. From wind-swept coastal live oaks, to our Blue Wave beach, I love the shops and galleries along Austin Street and the warm breeze off Aransas Bay.

One of Rockport’s many claims to fame, was the World’s Largest Blue Crab, a featured attraction in Roadside America.

I took a photo of the crab a few years ago. The original Blue Crab sat atop Del Mar Grill (Home of Dorothy’s Famous Crab Cakes, according to the historical marker on site) and weathered hurricanes Carla and Beulah in the 1960s before it was bought by the Rockport Chamber of Commerce for $200 for photographs and promotional use. The crab was rebuilt by a local artist in 2012 and placed on pylons overlooking Little Bay. Then in 2017 — months after receiving a fresh coat of paint — the crab was severely damaged by Hurricane Harvey. Fundraising efforts are underway to restore the crab to its home once again, but with all of the damage that our community sustained, it will likely be years before everything returns to “normal.”

I created this mixed media collage as an homage to Rockport’s Big Blue Crab.

My crab sits on an intricate, layered background, with painted papers and various collage techniques creating a one of a kind tribute to this local icon. The collage measures 16″x20″ on a wrapped canvas, edged in black and ready to hang. He’s almost as special as the original, and will have to serve as a reminder until the real crab is returned to his home by the bay.
