Black and White and Read All Over

“Black and White and Read All Over” is an original mixed media collage on an old book cover and measures approximately 6″x9″.

This colorful collage features loads of deconstructed black and white text, over an abstract red acrylic background, with the original cloth of the book cover “framing” the piece. Ready to hang from its aluminum wire and finished with a high gloss varnish, this is a play on the old joke “What’s black and white and red all over?” “A newspaper.”  Sure to delight anyone who loves words or typography.

Five Cent Cure

“Five Cent Cure” is an original handcut collage on a vintage book cover.

This old Histology textbook cover, is set to hang on aluminum wire, embellished with actual (devalued) Mexican pesos. The Histology book delivers a colorful plate of cells, which forms the background for an anatomical diagram, filled with all sorts of odd players. Old books and catalog imagery promise “5 cents down, $2 monthly”. The book edges are worn with some original writing and stains, but the collage is protected with a high gloss finish. Truly a one of a kind treat.

Lady Doll

“Lady Doll” is an original handcut collage on a vintage book cover. Vintage children’s book gives us the lady doll and text. Background is made up of one of a kind pages, produced with a chemical reaction to National Geographic ink. The book edges are worn, but the collage is protected with a high gloss finish. Truly a one of a kind gift, ready to hang with attached copper wire.

Yvonne’s Obsession

“Yvonne’s Obsession” is an original handcut collage on a vintage book cover.

This old math textbook cover, along with original pencil markings, is set to hang on a copper wire, embellished with some ancient abacus beads (…okay, I’m making that part up…) Yvonne looks dreamy, surrounded by numbers, formulas and word problems. Math is her true obsession. The book edges are worn, but the collage is protected with a high gloss finish. Bonus is the graffiti on the back, where some destructive student wrote in pen “Yes, sir she’s my baby, no, sir I don’t mean maybe.” Truly a one of a kind treat.

Book Smart

“Book Smart” is an original handcut paper collage on an actual book cover. Some imperfections in the substrate are part of its charm and one of a kind status.

I love books and I love all things vintage, so original collage on book covers is a natural. This lovely green novel featured a map, to which I added the ominous sounding “Street St.” from a penmanship workbook, and an actual library checkout card. A typed announcement for the church ice cream fundraiser is matched with the actual registration card from my vintage Smith-Corona manual typewriter. The guy might be Moses – I don’t quite remember, but he appears to have some tablet with writing, keeping with the book theme. His rather confused expression made me chuckle when I added the text “You can look thrillingly smart.” Thus, Book Smart was born.
