Sand and Sea I 🔴

“Sand and Sea I” and “Sand and Sea II” are original handcut mixed media collages, each on 5”x5” heavy watercolor paper.

A pair of simple collages to celebrate Spring Break, the beach, and sunny days. A throwback to simpler times, these vintage bathing beauties (and their gents) are modest in their swimwear, but still having a blast at the beach.  Both pieces are also tied together with unique backgrounds, made through a chemical reaction of CitraSolv and National Geographic magazines. You can almost feel the sea breeze and smell the salt air.

Blue Crab 🔴

I chose Rockport, Texas, in 2014 as the “Winter Texan” home for me and my RV. A quaint little coastal community, full of artists and Texas charm, Rockport has been my winter home since then. From wind-swept coastal live oaks, to our Blue Wave beach, I love the shops and galleries along Austin Street and the warm breeze off Aransas Bay.

One of Rockport’s many claims to fame, was the World’s Largest Blue Crab, a featured attraction in Roadside America.

I took a photo of the crab a few years ago. The original Blue Crab sat atop Del Mar Grill (Home of Dorothy’s Famous Crab Cakes, according to the historical marker on site) and weathered hurricanes Carla and Beulah in the 1960s before it was bought by the Rockport Chamber of Commerce for $200 for photographs and promotional use. The crab was rebuilt by a local artist in 2012 and placed on pylons overlooking Little Bay. Then in 2017 — months after receiving a fresh coat of paint — the crab was severely damaged by Hurricane Harvey. Fundraising efforts are underway to restore the crab to its home once again, but with all of the damage that our community sustained, it will likely be years before everything returns to “normal.”

I created this mixed media collage as an homage to Rockport’s Big Blue Crab.

My crab sits on an intricate, layered background, with painted papers and various collage techniques creating a one of a kind tribute to this local icon. The collage measures 16″x20″ on a wrapped canvas, edged in black and ready to hang. He’s almost as special as the original, and will have to serve as a reminder until the real crab is returned to his home by the bay.

Secrets

“Secrets” is an original, handcut paper and mixed media collage on 5″x7″ matboard.

Spent a whole day last weekend making painted papers for collage and had a blast playing with color and experimenting with mark-making. This background was one of those colorful little abstracts and I knew that the vibrant color would nicely offset some black and white imagery.

The lady is from a source that I’ve been dying to use, but have yet to find a perfect setting. She’s from a vintage “girly” magazine, with the theme of “BAD GIRLS U.S.A.” – and she was definitely a bad girl. The photo of our gal was taken in the back seat of a squad car! So she had some secrets.

Our guy was in a body builder ad from the same era, but his haunted eyes and expression seem to hide a secret, too. So this pair, I figured, could be the cover of a secret journal. What do you think they’re hiding?

Always Kiss Me

“Always Kiss Me” is a mixed media collage on 6”x6” canvas board. Layers of vintage paper, acrylics, and gesso make this subtle piece stand out. The title sentiment “Always Kiss Me Goodnight” was typed on my vintage Royal typewriter onto vintage book paper.

Lucky 7s

“Lucky 7s” is an original mixed media collage. I’ll just let this design speak for itself. The piece is approximately 13.5” high and 9” wide. Sawtooth hanger on block of wood means this unique piece is ready to hang. A definite conversation starter.

Some ‘splaining to do

Many layers are hidden behind the blue background and the Lucy in the corner is dark and somewhat hidden in this mysterious piece. The high gloss protective finish over the surface makes her a bit difficult to photograph, but she definitely makes a statement. If you love Lucy, you’ll love this piece!

Lucy lives on a solid, repurposed tabletop and is ready to hang on a wire.

match game | dating game

“match game | dating game” is an original, mixed media assemblage piece with found objects, cigar boxes, game pieces, 10 groomsmen, and moving parts! There is a lot going on here!

This piece, “match game | dating game”, started with a garage sale find – a ziploc baggie with not one, not two, but TEN plastic groomsmen – you know, the kind that go on the top of wedding cakes. I wanted to use all ten, and that is how this assemblage art piece was born.

Other “finds” in this piece include: cigar boxes, game boards (Monopoly, Parchesi, checkers, and a regional “Texas Tycoon” version of Monopoly), random puzzle pieces and game pieces (dice, checkers, Scrabble tiles, dominoes, Legos, poker chips, Monopoly houses, Bingo numbers), along with some odd bits (old cell phone, Dymo labels, a rusty old saw blade) and my usual assortment of ephemera (yearbooks, playing cards, Lotería cards). Add a spring, a bottle cap, some wire and some beads because I wanted to have “movement” in the piece. Plus a bit of paint, a thrift store frame, and lots of glue/adhesives.

Faded Hearts

“Faded Hearts” is an original handcut paper/mixed media collage on an 8”x10” wrapped canvas.

Sweet and understated, this abstract heart collage is ready to hang and would be a lovely gift for your Valentine. Original art that is fun, funky and functional!

Mirror, Mirror

“Mirror, Mirror” is an original, handcut paper collage on 5×7 heavy watercolor paper.

I love the juxtaposition between the sepia tones of the vintage catalog gal primping at her mirror, and the colorful flowers and wispy clouds that crisscross the design. Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all? Certainly this gal!

Camo

“Camo” is an original, mixed media collage on an 10×10 wood panel.

Fun, colorful and textured background matches this well-dressed doll in her green wool coat with the broken plaid design. The camouflaged outfit means she’s pretty well hidden, except the red ribbon on her hat, which might give away her location. Protective gloss finish and black edges make this wood panel collage ready to hang.
